Industry
Aerospace and Defense
Client
US Air Force
Initial Situation
Need to improve readiness. Low availability of aircraft.
Challenges:
- Low availability of aircraft due to maintenance delays.
- Bottlenecks within the maintenance process, specifically in a group of specialists.
Objectives:
- Increase the number of available aircraft.
- Reduce maintenance time (increase throughput) to improve overall readiness.
TOC Approach:
- Reducing Work in Progress (WIP):
- Implemented strategies to minimize the amount of work started but not yet completed, allowing for more focused and efficient use of resources.
- Full Kitting Before Work Started:
- Ensured that all necessary tools and parts were available before beginning any maintenance task, reducing downtime and delays.
- Finishing a Task Before Starting the Next:
- Emphasized the importance of completing each task fully before moving on to the next to avoid unnecessary disruptions and increase efficiency.
Implementation:
- Comprehensive training and implementation were provided to the squadron, ensuring that all personnel were aligned with the new processes and understood the TOC principles being applied.
Results:
- Increased Available Aircraft: The number of aircraft available for missions increased significantly.
- Faster Aircraft Maintenance: Maintenance times were reduced, leading to quicker turnaround and improved readiness.
- Improved Readiness: The overall readiness improved as a result of the increased availability and faster maintenance times.
Lessons Learned:
Root Cause Analysis: A thorough analysis of the specific constraints and challenges faced by each client is essential for developing effective, tailored solutions.
Customized Solutions: Cookie-cutter or copy-and-paste solutions do not deliver the best results. It is crucial to understand the root cause of issues before applying solutions that have been successful elsewhere.
